Town man shot in back
The TPHA Watch Alert Group (WAG) alert plan was put in motion Thursday, April 13 at 10:30 p.m. when a male was reported shot on Genesee Street across from the bus loop near Long Avenue.

TPHA members who live on Genesee St., Long Ave., Atwood Pl., Normandy Ave., Pine Ridge Rd., Pine Ridge Terr., and Andrews Ave. were immediately notified by phone that police were searching their neighborhood for the shooter described as a black male, about six feet tall, with a medium build. He was wearing black jeans and a black leather jacket. Members were told to be on alert but were warned to stay in their homes. Members who are firemen were not notified because the Pine Hill Hose Company was alerted to respond.

The victim told police he was coming home from a laundromat when a man shot him in the back. He said he was outside his apartment located in the 2390 block of Genesee Street when he noticed a man come up behind him. When he turned around, the assailant was pointing a gun at him. The victim ran for his apartment, crashed thru the door and fell to the ground, where he was shot, he told police.

The alleged shooter was last seen heading westbound on Genesee Street, on foot. Police stopped at least one METRO bus with negative results after they received a report that the suspect possibly hopped on a bus and escaped. One suspect was brought back to the scene but could not be identified as the assailant.

The victim was taken to Erie County Medical Center and released the same night.

Extensive Sanitary Sewer Repairs Planned for Pine Hill Neighborhoods
55 trees will be saved, 15 will be removed
Councilman Tom Johnson advised us that work will soon begin on repairing miles of deteriorated sanitary sewers in the Pine Hill area.
The lines were already surveyed by the Town's Engineering Department and a TV camera was used to identify damaged areas. Bids have been let out and excavation work is soon to begin. Johnson said the lines were surveyed to locate sections where sanitary sewer repairs are needed and their proximity to existing trees. He said after walking the entire area., workers counted approximately 70 trees that would have to be removed for sanitary sewer repairs, however, 55 of these trees can possibily be saved.

Saving as many trees as possible can be accomplished by relocating, realigning and using a lining process during the sanitary sewer rehabilitation project. However, due to sewer alignment and utility location conflicts, it will be necessary to remove 15 trees to complete the needed sanitary sewer repair work. The following sewer repair work is scheduled:
Loxley Rd.:
Spot repair total 296 feet of 8 inch sewer line; relocate sewer main in sidewalk area and remove four trees (12 inch Norway maples at No. 5 and No. 9; 6 inch Norway maples at No. 40 and No. 44)

Normandy Ave.:
Spot repair total 33 feet of 8" sewer line, tunnel 3 trees, remove one 15" Norway maple at No. 12).

Peachtree Rd.:
Slip-line 197 feet of 10" sewer main; spot repair 473 feet of 8" sewer line and remove 6 trees (24" ash at No. 37, 12" maples at No. 41, No. 59, No. 67 and No. 109; 4" crabapple at No. 73).
Pendennis Pl.:
Spot repair total 304 feet of 8" sewer line, relocate total 531 feet of 8" main line, and remove two trees (18" Norway maple at No. 20, and 4" ash at No. 24).

Floodplain Update
Cheektowaga has retained an engineering consulting firm to study and re-map the floodplain for Tributary (T-1) of Scajaquada Creek. The area affected is bordered by the thruway, Walden Ave., and Scajaquada Creek. A number of changes have occurred within (T-1) watershed since it was originally mapped by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) in the late 1970's. One important change occurred when Benderson Development constructed retention basins to gather rainfall from several properties along Walden Avenue. The results of this study indicate that these changes have significantly reduced the size of the effective floodplain.

The floodplain as originally mapped encompassed approximately 177 properties. Based on a comprehensive flood study analysis, a request has been made to FEMA for a Letter of Map Revision for Tributary (T-1). The revision will result in a change to the floodplain boundaries based on 100-year flood elevations which have been established as part of the study. These changes will affect several homes in the area with approximately twelve parcels being added to the floodplain and approximately 125 parcels being removed. The TPHA will obtain a copy of the study just completed and will notify all affected members of the association.
