County Grant Received For Crime Prevention
|
The Town Park Home Owners Association (TPHA)
received a grant this month from Erie County to help defray expenses
incurred by its
Watch Alert Group (WAG)
and
Mobile Citizens Patrol
.
County Legislator Greg Olma delivered the
check which will be used to help pay for postage and distribution of
printed material and reports compiled and prepared by members, and
published solely for the purpose of assisting residents with
maintaining effective crime-prevention programs and services to
youth, adults, and/or senior citizens.
Watch Alert Group (WAG)
The TPHA has formed a member home-based telephone
tree for the purpose of directing crime-prevention efforts in town.
Whenever crime activity is reported within our membership area,
an alert plan is put into motion whereby members who reside in the
target area are notified by telephone regardless of the hour.
The WAG plan has already proved successful especially when suspects
were being pursued by police through backyards at night.
Mobile Citizens Patrol
This Association applied to be part of the Communities On
Phone Patrol (COPP) pilot program, a collaborative effort between the U.S.
Justice Department and Verizon Wireless (formerly Frontier Cellular).
As a community service, John O'Malley, COPP Program Coordinator
at Verizon, provided the TPHA four cellular phones with
unlimited use and free air time to help deter neighborhood crime in
Cheektowaga and report incidents to police radio dispatchers.
A total $4,000 in grants were received from the state through efforts of Assemblyman
Tokasz and from the county through efforts of Legislator Olma. These
grants were used to purchase radios and identification marking for
patrol units and to pay for operating expenses.
As warm weather approaches, the Mobile Citizen Patrol program will go into
full swing with four patrol units cruising neighborhoods in the
Harlem police district. Surveillance is also maintained around Pine
Hill School and three church lots, Town Park, the Villa Maria
College complex and 10 cemeteries. Because units move slowly through
neighborhoods, drivers are asked to use caution when passing.
Each 2-person patrol unit is clearly marked and is equipped with a
cellular telephone to maintain communication with police and fire dispatchers
as well as a 2-way radio to communicate with other units and the Associations'
base station. Radio receivers are also provided by the Cheektowaga
Police Department to keep units appraised of activity in the
area. Patrol units use the Genesee Street substation to prepare reports.

Pine Hill Fire Fighters Respond To Eggert Road House Fire
|
On May 9 at 11:01 p.m., the Pine Hill Fire Department was dispatched
through the Cheektowaga fire control office to a reported lightning strike with unknown
fire at 97 Eggert Road. Fire chief Edward Dean (TPHA member) was the first to
respond. While en route to the scene he received updated information from fire control
that several calls were received reporting a lightning strike. At this time assistant
chiefs Timothy Tryjankowski and Timothy Bull (both TPHA members) were also responding.
When chief Dean arrived at the scene he found a 2-story wood frame structure
with fire showing on the side of the structure and smoke coming from under the eaves. He
immediately reported a working fire to the fire control office. At this time Engine 1 was responding. A quick
assessment of the scene noted that the chimney was blown right off the roof and was laying
in the driveway.
Upon entering the structure, fire fighters found the upstairs attic fully
involved with fire extension coming from the side wall. Chief Dean took command of operations
and assistant chief Tryjankowski took command operating out of the Rescue Unit. All occupants
were reported out of the structure. Engine 1 truck officer Michael Braun used the truck's
front steamer connection and ran a 1-3/4" hose line to the front door and up the front stairs.
The attack crew included fire fighters Mark Dean, Timothy Tryjankowski Jr. and truck
officer Braun. Ladders were established to one side wall for ventilation and for emergency egress
if needed and to the opposite wall for roof ventilation. Fire fighters Donald Gill (TPHA member),
James Kowalski and Scott Steger were in charge of roof operations.
Fire fighters Brian Kirst (TPHA member), Joe Morshiemer, Stan Zolnowski and Lt.
Steven Moeller established a second hose line as backup.
The fire was reported under control at 11:12 p.m. and out at 11:47. Rescue Fire
Dept. and Cleveland Hill Fire Dept. responded to the mutual aid call.

Thanks For The Help At Recent House Fire
Twenty-five fire fighters responded to a May 9 house fire on Eggert Road.
Pine Hill Hose Company responded with two Engines, one Ladder truck, one Heavy Rescue
and one Light Rescue. Rescue Fire Department answered to mutual aid and responded with one Pumper
to the Pine Hill fire hall for standby. There were no injuries reported. The upper
bedroom and attic area suffered extensive damage. After the fire was extinguished, extensive overhaul
was needed involving the need to peel off the underlying roofing material which consisted of cedar shingles.
Cleveland Hill Fire Department answered to mutual aid, responding to the scene
with a Heavy Rescue to assist with overhauling duties. Fire fighters covered the first floor
with tarps to protect from further water damage. Thanks to everyone who responded.
